S03 Ep07: Talking to Yourself

If you are someone who talks to yourself, are you practicing a transformational habit, or is it a sign of mental illness? The answer probably lies in what you are saying and how you speak to yourself. Our words have tremendous power to breathe life or welcome death. We can get empowered or disempowered by words. So are we talking to ourselves and what are we saying?

One of the valuable habits we have cultivated in our lives is the power of speaking to yourself. When you are having a rough day, a tough season or even a hard life, talking to yourself in a loving and powerful way can make a huge difference for overcoming.

Learning to Talk to Yourself

I did not know the power of talking to myself, so I had to discover it and practice it. I first learned that we already talk to ourselves in what is called, “self-talk.” It is the inner dialogue that we have regarding our life: how we see God, ourselves and the circumstances around us. Learning to talk to yourself in an empowering way can change the course of your journey.

We’ve had to learn how to talk to ourselves in a productive way, but each stage of learning has been incredibly fruitful.

The Power of Talking to Yourself

Talking to yourself can help focus your thoughts. It can give direction to what you need to focus on, getting your mind out of destructive thinking and into a better direction. I have found that it also enhances my thought life.

When I am struggling to keep my mind together, speaking out loud can bring organization and clarity to my heart and mind, so I can get out of a funk. In fact, I have found that talking to myself can change my emotional state quickly. It has also taught me to become a good friend to myself, rather than my own worst enemy. It gives me a chance to look in the mirror and empower who God says that I am, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

King David spoke to himself and encouraged himself. It brought him up out of the most troubling times. This is a practice that you can apply today and begin experiencing the fruit of it.
