A Dull Heart with a Head Full of Knowledge

A common plague that exists today involves hearts that are dull, but their minds are filled with all kinds of impressive knowledge. They have data or information, but they lack the heart connection of experiencing truth.

God designed you to experience truth and experience who He is. In fact, truth is actually a person…the Living Lord Himself.

When you have a heart experience with God, everything comes into an alignment with a different kind of journey. Connection with Him becomes personal, more than just routine or intellectual. Experiences become more meaningful, because you are communing with a God who is personal and real to your every move.

Head Knowledge with Dull Hearts

Many honest believers admit to having knowledge about the kingdom of God, but their hearts are dull, numbed and disconnected from the experience of it.

Others take pride in their lofty knowledge, even though their hearts are dull. They have become content with just getting smarter in head knowledge. They settled for a life that “looks” spiritual to others but lacks any depth of heart reality.

In our modern culture’s pursuit of knowledge as the highest aim, we can become so dull in our hearts relationally.

Do You Understand with Your Heart?

Jesus addressed this to the generation of His day:

‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand,
And seeing you will see and not perceive;
For the hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed,
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears,
Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.’
Matthew 13:14-15

This is the main reason why Jesus spoke in parables. He used the power of stories to draw in those who were seeking with their whole heart. Those who listened to Jesus, looking for quick information, “Three Steps to Life Change” or a form of theological knowledge they could impress someone with, were highly disappointed. In fact, they were often confused.

They didn’t know how to engage the Kingdom of God with a full heart. Religion had trained them to place God in routine boxes that gave them a form of engaging God, but the power is filtered out.

From Theory to Personal Experience

Our current generation has the highest level of access to information and knowledge in the history of mankind. But our hearts are not improving in wisdom and depth. Our relationships reflect how little our hearts are healing and growing in wholeness.

Now don’t misunderstand me. There is nothing wrong with growing in knowledge. The problem is, we live in a generation that is saturated with data, information and opinions, with little experience of truth.

We can tell someone how to pray, even when we haven’t experienced the power of prayer ourselves. It’s easy to tell someone about the joy of the Lord, but when was the last time you lived in it? You can share with someone about any aspect of God, but have you experienced His nature in that way personally?

When you live from a heart that is experiencing God, you move from mental theory and into the heart encounter you were made for. If knowledge doesn’t eventually lead you to deeper heart passion and fruitful experiences, you may become intellectually smart, but spiritually dormant. When truth is experienced in your heart, it becomes a part of who you are, not just something you can quote.

Truth is not embedded in your heart until it is activated through experience. When you take action and live out what you are learning, it will lead you to have the power of truth deeply rooted in your heart. Because of this, you often have to go through something in life to really experience the power of truth that can set your heart free.

Heart Transformation

If the heart is not regularly cultivated in real and authentic relationships with God and others, mankind has a tendency to seek transformation by forcing the mind to cooperate. We attempt to “think” our way into transformation. Our focus moves more into performance, achievement and the application of data, more than leaning into relational wholeness.

Methods often feed a person with information, but can leave them without transformation. This has created a society that has theories about everything, but little experience about how to live life to the fullest. Mankind has learned to be content with knowledge that has no experience to galvanize it into our being.

If simply gaining more information would do the trick, then the smartest people in the world would have the most fruit in their life. But we all know this is not true.

The key to engaging the life of the heart is desire and belief. When we believe, we open up the power of faith to move our lives into powerful directions. Desire is the connection of an awakened heart for what is possible. When desire is dead, the heart goes cold. When belief is absent, the heart becomes hard.

If you don’t have desire, ask God to restore it. If you struggle to believe, ask God to help you with your unbelief. This comes down to a place of choice. Only you can decide to move the life of your heart into a renewed direction. God will meet you, but you have to make the choice to yield to His supernatural power.
