In this episode of Sunday Live, I dive into the book of Philippians for a teaching on detecting performance-based influencers in the church. I unpack Paul’s striking warning to “beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation” (Philippians 3:2) and what that actually means for us today. We talk about Judaizers, legalism, checklist Christianity, holiness enforcers, doctrinal watchdogs and the guilt-and-shame tactics that creep into ministry, along with the difference between living FOR righteousness and living FROM righteousness in Christ.
Melissa also joins me to celebrate the launch of my new book, Freedom from Just Right, But Never Enough: The Christian Perfectionist Healing Journey and our friendly neighborhood Church Lady stops by with a hilarious (and convicting) take on “10 Signs of a Terrorist Christian Perfectionist” you won’t want to miss.
We also open it up for your questions, covering topics like Salvation OCD versus genuinely questioning your faith, scrupulosity, and the fear of following a “false Jesus” or a “therapist Jesus.” I respond to a beloved listener who is seeking balance and also wanting to help others who are struggling with mental health battles. We get into guilt versus the Holy Spirit, how to set healthy boundaries with toxic people without spiraling into shame, what biblical conviction and repentance really mean versus how they’re commonly mis-taught and what true spiritual accountability looks like. One community member also shares a raw, personal journey through decades of anxiety, SSRIs, medication changes, and nervous system healing — and we talk through what compassion-based healing can look like in the middle of that.
