Meditation Does Not Involve Introspection
Meditation involves dwelling on who God is and pondering His nature. We begin to reflect on what it means to our transformation and our daily walk in life. As we dwell on His nature, we become more inclined to manifest it in our lives.
Many believe they practice meditation, but really it is introspection. Introspection, which is not meditation, promotes an incessant habit of inward observation and examination of one’s own mental and emotional state, with the intent of trying to figure out issues and fix them. It becomes a self-obsessed world. This never produces long term results, nor does it assist in the fight against getting free from strongholds. Introspection’s obsessive focus is on past failures, which God never tells us to spend time dwelling on. It also creates an addictive habit of always checking on how we feel inside, which gives the enemy’s thoughts way too much validation and focus. Practicing introspection trains us to be so aware of all the garbage that’s going on within us that we cannot even be present where we are right now. It steals what can happen today, while we are fixated on the battles we carry from yesterday.
God brings us through transformation when we come into contact with His truth and love. If the past is brought up, it is for redemptive purposes, to see us healed and free. On the other hand, introspection is constantly turning up every stone and pulling back every issue of the past, trying to identify all the areas that we need to deal with, when what is usually found is more accusation, guilt, condemnation, self-pity, regret, fear and hopelessness.
Unfortunately, this has become a habit for many and has turned into a religious routine that has kept people looking in the rear view mirror while sitting in neutral. It has created a self-consumed culture dwelling on their issues all day. In the process we ignore those who legitimately need our love and need us to be present. Part of our healing involves letting go of the bondage of introspection and release ourselves into a life of freedom, especially in our meditation.
The way we turn from introspection is to begin a new focus, which involves turning our attention on the nature of God and the character of Christ Jesus that is available to us.
