Part of the resistance against the church’s identity is what the Bible calls an anti-christ spirit. If you look with spiritual eyes, what is warring against your identity is this antichrist spirit. The antichrist spirit is not just the spirit that will work in the antichrist, as spoken of in the book of Revelation. This is describing a spiritual intelligence that will attack from the time Jesus ascended till the anti-christ is revealed. It is a way of thinking that has been and will be spreading in the minds of people, to deter them from walking in their true identity and purpose in God. John tells us in his writing that we don’t have to anticipate it, this counterfeit spirit is already in the world.
this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 1 John 4:3b KJV
John describes the ways of the anti-christ spirit and how we can better discern it.
Hereby know ye the spirit of God. Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. And every spirit that confesses not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God. This is the spirit of antichrist, which you’ve heart that it should come, but it’s now already in the world. 1 John 4:3a
So if this is already working in the world, we need to be able to discern its work in our lives and in the culture, so that we can prevent its work from becoming a leaven in our lives. Let’s take a moment to break down its work.
The antichrist spirit’s ultimate goal is the work of satan to bring an anti-messiah representative to this planet. He will be offer himself as someone who will bring peace, though not true peace, and a rescuing from problems. People will turn to him for answers and help. He will be able to carry some works of signs, wonders and miraculous kinds of things. He will use the vulnerability of people who have not remain grounded in God, but have sought for someone to rescue them out. Instead of growing in who they are, they will see for a someone to rescue them. In this lack of maturity they will accept a counterfeit king.
This spirit counterfeits the true identity of Christ as well as our identity in Christ. As believers, we are given a new identity that is “in Christ.” We are in Him and He is in us. The anti-Christ spirit seeks to keep that from manifesting fully in our lives. The word “anti” speaks of “one who opposes.” He opposes seeing the nature of Christ from manifesting through you. You were called to be in Christ, which gives you a new nature that says, I want you to begin living by that new nature. Do not serve that old nature that wars against you. The old programmed ways of thinking that war in your members. Begin to serve and understand me in this new identity. The anti-christ spirit will not allow you to see the full potential of your identity.
The anti-christ spirit opposes the anointing of God from working in you. A power aspect of Christ’s name speaks of “Anointed One.” So if we understand our identity, then we can know that carry an anointed work of Christ in our lives. The anti-christ spirit seeks to steal the anointing of God from working in your life. John teaches us that this anointing is in you, waiting to come out.
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you . . . 1 John 2:27a KJV
The Bible says we have the anointing. What is the anointing? People often complicate this. The anointing is the supernatural power of God working in a believer. It is that simple. It does not flow out of performance, nor does it flow from being perfect in everything. It works in accordance with us coming into agreement with our identity, which is in Christ. When we come into full agreement with our identity, we grasp our fuller potential. The anointing of God will also work in conjunction with our identity formation to fulfill the work of God through us. If the anti-christ spirit can keep you from understanding your identity, then the anointing of God will remain dormant in your life.
The anointing of God is the “Greater Works Stealer,” preventing the church from manifesting the full potential of power on the planet. In order to see this, we have to understand who Jesus is.
When you look at who Jesus Christ is, He is God the Word, Jehovah Elohim, come in the flesh to live as a human being amongst us. John says, that it is important to know that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. What does this mean? It means we need to understand that He lived as a human being on this planet. Although He is a member of the eternal Godhead with the Father and the Holy Spirit, He divested Himself of the glory Had with the Father and he came to live as a human being.
. . . but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man . . . Philippians 2:7-8 NKJV
When He was resurrected after His crucifixion, He ascended to the Father, where He is now all God and all man, seated at the right hand of the Father. He is the Messiah to come to rule and reign as King, to the glory of the Father. But when He lived on this planet, He lived under the confines of human living. He did not walk around the planet in His full glory as God. A lot of Christians do not understand that Jesus did what He did as a man, laying aside His divinity while walking this planet, mainly so that He could truly be a model for us.
This does not mean He is not divine, as many false teachings would say, it means that He walked this planet as a human to show what normal Christianity should be. He came to serve and show us what a person in right standing with God is capable of. He healed the sick, cast out devils, raised the dead, cleansed the lepers and so much more. Yet in order to do this, He had to be filled with the Holy Spirit, just like you and I need to. He was tempted and tested, just like you and I have to be.
When we see Jesus, we should look at His life and say, “We, as a church body, have the potential to walk in the same.” That is really what God wants from us. Jesus looked at His disciples and said, “Even greater works shall you do.”
how God anointed Jesus Christ with power and the Holy Ghost and He went about healing all those who were oppressed of the devil. Because God was with Him. Acts 10:38
The problem is that most Christians think, “Well, Jesus had the whole ‘God thing’ going for Him, so that’s why He was able to do those great works.” This is not true. If Jesus did all those things in God-form, then He would not have needed to be filled with the Holy Spirit. If He walked in full God-form, all humanity would die around Him because the full glory of God cannot be around sin. If He walked in full God-form, He would not have been able to die on the cross, because God cannot die. If He did it in total God-form, then He did not come in the flesh, like the Bible says and work the miracles as a human being–therefore you and I cannot walk in that same power.
The antichrist spirit doesn’t like it when you recognize Jesus came in the flesh. Why? For two main reasons:
1) Because the devil knows if you get an understanding that Jesus walked in many of the temptations you battle you’d begin to overcome them at a greater level.
2) He also knows if he can keep you from walking in the greater works of Jesus, then he has capped your potential on this planet. The truth is, what Jesus did, we, as the body of Christ together, can do, should do and so much more!!!!
If you’d recognize that what Jesus did, as a human being, filled with the Holy Ghost, you’d get the potential of what you individually and the church, corporately, could begin to walk into.
The antichrist spirit’s first step is to say, no! Block from who you are in Christ so you can’t see it. Then step 2 is: no, Jesus did that stuff as God. He had the whole God thing going for Him. You cannot do those things. Then we fall into these myths:
1) The gifts of God are not available for today.
2) God heals if He wants if to.
3) The Gospels and the book of Acts are nice stories, not possibilities for this hour.
The anti-christ spirit has stolen many identities. It is why so many people are bored reading the Bible, because they have lost the possibility of those things being applicable for today. Who wants to read in the Bible about a church that walks in signs and wonders and miracles if we can’t walk in the same? So we end up saying, “give me the Staples easy button. Get me outta here. Rapture! Hurry up and come. Jesus, this world is just growing wicked. Get us outta here.”
So where do you need to confront this anti-work in your life and take back your identity and potential in God?
