Anxiety for millions of people creates a troubling of the mind for an uncertain event, but it is even more than that. An etymology of this word provides some fascinating insight, because anxious comes from the Latin word anxius which means “to choke, to cause distress”. A related word means “tightness or narrowness.” Anxiety is a word that expresses the painful impressions, physiological reactions, and mental uneasiness that comes over you.
Most people who struggle with this express that they do not even really know where the anxiousness is coming from or what is happening within them, but the effects are nonetheless taking effect. Although there may be thoughts accompanying anxiety, many times one does not even know the clear object of the anxiousness, especially when it comes to what is professionally called Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). It is a presence that seems to loom and swell without relenting.
We have spent the past two episodes sharing our journey of facing anxiety, while giving you some insights as to what may be giving anxiety room to torment. This week we want to move into a much needed subject, and that is developing a strategy to overcome anxiety.
It’s great to have spiritual insights, but we also need practical tools to live this out. That’s what we hope to cover in today’s episode.
